India's first Water Metro : What is Water Metro

 


       Today Prime Minister Narendra Modi Inaugurated the India's first Water metro in Kochi city of Kerala. It is a metro project by Kochi Metro Rail Limited. This metro does not run on railway tracks but it operates on water body "ocean". It will connect many ilands in southern region near Kerala in India.

Kochi , the commercial capital of kerala is surrounded by 10 ilands , The iland is depend on the city of Kochi for earning the livelihood , trade , business , healthcare and education . Thus the plan was to connect the iland with the city in a metro like fashion having seamless connectivity  with metro rail system. For this Kochi metro was interested in Water Metro Rail project with the 50-50 % interest of government of India and government of Kerala  it is a unique mobility solution connecting 38 water terminals across 10 ilands and a mainland  on a streatch of 76 kilometers expecting to transport 34000 passengers everyday.



     The funding of project  from KFW Germany could only be possible due to the Sovean Galantry Government of India .

   Kochi Water Metro is the first of its kind electric public water transport . Be state of the art battery powered fully air conditioned electric boats are manufactured in Kochin Shipyard Limited by boosting the Make In India initiative. The water metro terminals are designed as disabled friendly as concrete floating puntools . Kochi water metro have two types of boats i.e 100 passenger capacity and 50 passenger capacity. these boats are equipped with the latest LTO batteries and in just 15 minutes chargers have the ability to fully charge the boats. The vessels are equipped with latest navigation and communication tools to safegaurd passengers.

The water metro project involves the deployment of modern, fuel-efficient, and eco-friendly boats that can carry up to 100 passengers at a time. The boat will operate on a fixed schedule, providing a convenient and reliable mode of transportation for daily commuters.

      Apart from easing traffic congestion, the Water Metro project also aims to promote sustainable and eco-friendly transportation and boost tourism in the region.
