BharOS : India's own Operating System

 BharOS:Indian Operating System

Yesterday the Union Minister for Communications, Electronics and Information Technology, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and Union Telecom and Rail Minister Ashwini Vaishnav taken the test of India's Own Operating System known as BharOS which developed by IIT Madras

It is the Initiative by IIT madras under the Initiative of PM Narendra Modi's "Aatma Nirbhar Bharat " and "Digital India". IIT Madras has incubated facilities to boost new technologies and startups, JandK operations Private Limited is on of them. The BharOS Operating system is made by the help of JandK operations. According to developers it will benifit 100 crore of indian mobile users.

Currently this OS is not available for common people. IIT Madras is looking to collaborate with private startups, Indian tech companies, and government organizations  to develop it at world level to eliminate the dependency over Android and iOS. It is incubated by Pravartak Technologies Foundation a section 8 (Non-profit-company) established by IIT Madras.  This foundation is funded by the central government's Department of Science and Technology under its National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems(NMICPS).

An operating system weaves into making a connection between hardware and software of any device. OS provides all user experience from hardware, software, input and output of data, keeps trak of data, programm's file name, physical locations and performs common functions like copy, erase or backup of data.BharOS provides users more freedom, control, flexibility to choose and use only the apps that they wants. It can revolutionize the user thinking about security and privacy.

There will be no pre installed apps (NDA) No Default Apps. According to developers NOTA (Native  Over The Air) is pre installed on the device so user don't need to mannually update their phone. It is enabled with PASS(Private Apps Store Services). It will provide trusted apps list to install and use blindly.BharOS is currently used by Sensitive government Organizations that have strict security and privacy requirements.

It would have some laggings in comparision to Android because there are no details on what all features it provide to users to make it easier to use the device in day-to-day  life. As android offers personalisation options, privacy, features, battery analysis, cloud data storage etc.

The whole Computer OS market is captured by microsoft and of mobile phones, by Android and iOS. In India several startups also developed indian OS but they are not much popular or they are limited to feature  phones only. Reliance Jio also have an OS named KaiOS but it only available in Jio feature phone. Jio's smartphone runs on Pragati OS which is developed by Jio and Google. PhonePe's IndusOS, Snaplion, Plobal App, Instappy, TableHero. Government agency CDAC in 2015 also made own OS named BOSS (Bharat Operating System Solutions), its latest version of 2019 called Unnati is used by very few  institutions and individuals.

BharOS is an Android Open Source Project (AOSP). It is made by using google's AOSP plateform. As it has no pre installed apps so it will have more storage and improved battery life. It is a government funded project to develop free and open source Operating System by Department of Science and Technology. It aims to lower the dependencies on foreign OS.

During testing Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said "Congratulations to everyone involved in developing the system. For very first time when our Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji talked about digital India 8 years ago, some of our friends mocked him but today, technocrats, innovators, industries and policymakers and academic institutions of country have accepted his vision after eight years".

Ashwini Vaishnav said "There will be diffuculties in this journey and there are many people around the world who will bring difficulties and will not want any such system to be successful".

IIT Madras director Professor V Kamakati said "BharOS service is a mobile OS built on foundation of trust , with a focus on providing users more freedom, control and flexibility to choose and use only the app that they need. This innovative system promises to revolutionise the way user think about security and privacy on their mobile. IIT Madras looks forward to working closely with many more private industries, government agencies strategic agencies and telecom service providers to increase the usage and adoption of BharOS in our country.
